AMFA vs IAM: Your Representation Matters

  • All current elected officials in AMFA are licensed AMT/AME.AMT leadership better represents AMT workforce because they know the trade.
    • IAM represents truckers, auto workers, plumbers, manufacturing and aerospace.Industrial unions like IAM are non-selective in their membership – they simply want member expansion and dues growth.

  • Class and craft exclusivity of AMFA - AMFA only represents aircraft maintenance.
    • IAM President is a pipefitter by trade.

  • As of 2024, Of the 10 highest paid carriers (national and regional) AMFA negotiated contracts for 5 of them Southwest ($67.45),Alaska ($67.17), SunCountry ($54.75), Sprirt ($55.00), Horizon ($42.85)
    • In the top 10, IAM - Hawaiian ($53.08) and part of American ($59.49)

  • AMFA is top-down democratic, from elected officials to contract proposals.We ask our membership to vote on everything.AMFA members control AMFA.
    • IAM appoints their leadership to long term paid positions without membership say (good ol boys club)

  • AMFA positions are subject to recall if your elected officials are not representing you, you can submit a recall petition to hold them accountable.
    • IAM positions are not easily subject to member scrutiny (good ol boys club)

  • AMFA National President makes 150% of the average of all represented technicians.AMFA’s Elected officials wages only go up when your negotiated wages go up.
    • IAM National President makes $668k per year off of membership dues

  • AMFA has open and transparent negotiations.
    • IAM has held backdoor meetings with the company and then presents the results to membership for vote without say.

  • AMFA AMT wages have always gone up in the 27 years that AMFA has represented aircraft maintenance.
    • In 1985, a proposed 25 cents pay increase for rampers driven by IAM caused a strike for the AMT workforce
    • In an early representation for technicians, IAM negotiated an Alaska contract that drove down licensed technician wages for the sake of IAM represented rampers.
  • Seattle station used to own ramp work - well paid IAM jobs for Alaska.Then, they contracted out their own work to McGee at half the payrate, then became IAM again.

  • In 2016, Virgin was non-union, and no VX member lost their job in the integration, and AMFA dovetailed seniority one for one, year for year, no lost time for either side.

  • AMFA dues is 2x base pay
    • IAM dues is 2x All in rate – remember their president needs $668k salary

  • No other air carrier will be your representative. AMFA has Airline Representatives to specifically represent your voice to your company. AMFA has shop reps in every station, every bid location to represent our membership.You will be heard and represented!
    • IAM appoints any air carrier rep near your location to be your general chair

  • AMFA Contract Page 121 - LOA 9 – Job protection for all represented employees.
    • IAM makes promises of bringing back heavy maintenance work without evidence or ability to do so.
    • IAM’s contract language in 1985 drove the permission for Alaska to outsource heavy maintenance and ramp work.Scope Article 2, C.

  • AMFA Contract Page 6 - Article 3, F, 2,b. “there will be no system wide realignment of technician and related group position, or system rebid resulting from the integration of the seniority lists or the implementation of a single collective bargaining agreement”

  • Annual Wage review -When the industry goes up your pay goes up in October.
